What is Corneal Transplant ?
What is Corneal Transplant ?
Corneal Transplant or corneal grafting is a surgical process where the affected cornea is replaced by corneal tissue entirely or partially. Normally the graft would be taken from recently died person with no diseases or other factors that may cause the visibility of the recipient. The cornea transplant is otherwise known as keratoplasty.
A cornea transplant can bring back vision, reduce pain and increase the appearance of cornea.
Purpose of corneal transplant
Corneal Transplant is performed to get back the vision of a person who has damaged cornea. One may get releived from pain and other factors that is associated with the corneal diseases.
The other conditions that can be treated with this transplant includes:
Thinning of cornea.
Scarring of Cornea caused by infection or injury
Swelling and clouding of Cornea.
Ulcers caused by infection.
Risks with Corneal Transplant.
Though corneal transplant is a safe process some risks are involved in it.
Some risks are:
Eye infection
clouding of eye lens
swelling of the cornea.
Bleeding
Allergic reactions
Types of corneal Transplant.
Penetrating Keratoplasty: A traditional full thickness transplant that includes the surgical removal of the two thirds of damaged cornea. The damaged area is replaced with clear healthy donor tissue which is placed by sutures.
It will take a year or more for the visual recovery since the corneal surface may be irregular after the surgery. In that case a contact lens may be required for the clearest vision.
Those who have undergone with a full thickness graft should be careful to avoid any injury that could break open the smaller opening.
Lamellar keratoplasty (Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty)
Instead of replacing the affected cornea, Lamellar keratoplasty replaces only the affected part with the donor graft. Lamellar keratoplasty keeps descemet’s membrane and the endothelium.
