Eye Health and Keratoconus

Generally our vision is through cornea,which is the central part of the surface of eye.The cornea is in a dome shape.Sometimes the cornea fails to maintain this shape and it bulges like a cone. This condition of eye is called as Keratoconus.

What Causes Keratoconus?

Fiber proteins in the eye called collagen help to hold the cornea in place and keep it from bulging out. When these proteins become weak, they loss the strength to hold the shape and cornea becomes progressively more cone shaped.

Keratoconus is sometimes appear as genetic disorder. If you have it and have children, it’s a good to have check their eyes checked for it starting at the age of 10. This happens more in people with certain medical problems, including any of allergic conditions. It is possible the condition must be related to chronic eye rubbing. Most often, there is no eye disease or injury that can explain why the eye starts to change.

Keratoconus usually starts in the time of teenage. It can begin in childhood or up to 30 years old peoples. It is possible to occur people who have 40 years and above, but it is less common.The changes of shape of the cornea can happen suddenly or may occur over few years. The changes may result in blur vision, streaking of lights,feel halos and glare at the night.

The changes takes place in the shape of cornea can happen quickly or may occur for several years. The changes may stop at any time, or they continue for decades. In most of the peoples who have keratoconus, both eyes are eventually affected, not always to the same extent. It first develops in one eye and then in the other eye.

Can Keratoconus Damage Vision?

The changes in the cornea can make it difficult for the eye to focus without eyeglasses or contact lenses. In fact, a corneal transplant may needed to restore the vision if the condition is critical.Laser vision correction surgery -- LASIK or PRK – is very dangerous to the peoples with Keratoconus. Anyone with even a small amount of Keratoconus should not try LASIK surgery.

How can we Diagnose Keratoconus?

* Sudden changes of vision in one eye
* See as double vision while looking with one eye
* Bright lights looks like have halos around them
* Lights streaking
* Seeing triple ghost images

How Keratoconus is Treated?

Treatments usually starts with a new eyeglass. If eyeglasses don't provide accurate vision, then contact lenses may be recommended. In small cases, new eyeglasses make the vision clear otherwise it is necessary to use contact lenses or seek other treatments to strengthen the cornea and improve vision.A last chance is cornea transplantation.  This involves removing the center of the cornea and replace it by a donor cornea.
